Recently, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that India's solar photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity has reached 100 gigawatts, which has been included in the Approved List of Solar Photovoltaic Module Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-I, an increase of over 97 gigawatts from 2.3 gigawatts in 2014.
Prahad Joshi, Minister of the Indian New Renewable Energy Alliance, emphasized this achievement, stating: "India has achieved a historic milestone - under the Approved Models and Manufacturers List (ALMM), solar photovoltaic module production capacity has reached 100 gigawatts, a significant increase from 2.3 gigawatts in 2014! Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the driving force of transformative initiatives such as the Efficient Solar Module Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI), India is building a strong and self-sufficient solar manufacturing ecosystem. This achievement will enhance the pace towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and help India achieve its goal of reaching 500 gigawatts of non fossil energy production capacity by 2030
ALMM List-I was released on March 10, 2021, with an initial registered capacity of approximately 8.2 gigawatts, and has now surpassed the 100 gigawatt mark. The department also shared the updated list on August 13, 2025. It is distributed among 100 manufacturers and operates 123 manufacturing units, an increase from 21 manufacturers in 2021.
Today's list includes both established companies and new entrants, with several companies adopting efficient technology and vertically integrated operations.
The Indian Ministry of Renewable Energy added, "The Indian government is committed to achieving self-sufficiency in the solar photovoltaic manufacturing industry and making it an important participant in the global value chain. This commitment is supported through a series of comprehensive measures, including the high-efficiency solar photovoltaic module PLI program and measures to provide a fair competitive environment for Indian manufacturers. ”
ALMM is India's flagship program aimed at stimulating demand for locally produced solar cell modules by mandating that only listed component manufacturers can be used for government or government aid projects.
Starting from June 1, 2026, the department will implement a similar ALMM List II for solar cells required for use in the solar modules listed in List I. The department recently released a preliminary list that includes domestic solar cell manufacturers with a production capacity of 13 gigawatts.
At the TaiyangNews Solar Technology Conference, Subrahmanyam Pulipaka, CEO of the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI), predicted in New Delhi in April 2025 that India's solar module manufacturing market would reach 160 gigawatts by 2030, but he also added that India would lag behind in vertical integration. He expects the production capacity of solar cells to reach 120 gigawatts, while the production capacity of silicon wafers and polycrystalline silicon will reach 100 gigawatts each.
Earlier this year, in February 2025, India achieved a milestone of 100 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic installed capacity, an increase of 3450% from 2.8 gigawatts in 2014.
